Plainsboro Township was incorporated on May 6, 1919. Before this date, all areas north of Plainsboro Road and Dey Road were part of South Brunswick Township. All areas south of Plainsboro Road and Dey Road were part of Cranbury Township. Ultimately, the Plainsboro Township was created in 1919, due to inadequate school facilities. Both South Brunswick and Cranbury townships refused to build a new, larger, fireproof school in Plainsboro Village. In turn, residents John V.B. Wicoff, a wealthy Trenton lawyer and businessman, and Henry W. Jeffers, Sr. made the notion to have the New Jersey legislature form the Plainsboro Township. Today, residents of the township celebrate the date of May 6 every year with a parade, festival, and a concert.
The average income for a household in the township is around $72,000.
Plainsboro Township History
The Unami Native American tribe originally inhabited the present-day Plainsboro Township area. Around the early seventeenth century, the Dutch settled the area, namely for its agricultural advantages.
The intersection of Dey and Plainsboro Roads is the oldest developed section of the township. The roads are thought to have been named after a Dutch built tavern that resided at the intersection in the early 1700s, called The Plains Tavern. This tavern still stands, along with the historic Plainsboro Inn building that was built next to the tavern, at the Plainsboro Road and Dey Road intersection.
At the onset of the twentieth century, Plainsboro Township evolved into a large farming area, with the first dairy farm opening in 1897. Other notable farms included the Parker, Simonson, Stults, and Groendyke farms. Some of the farms have now turned into Plainsboro, NJ homes for sale, as well as housing developments. The Simonson and Stults remain operational in Plainsboro Township today.
Lincoln Properties and Princeton University, which owns most of the Plainsboro Township, jointly developed the area of the township in 1971 to what it is today - a growing suburban town that is able to maintain its charming and rural past. Two high schools were built following the development, including West Windsor-Plainsboro High School South and West Windsor-Plainsboro High School North. In addition to the newly built Plainsboro, NJ homes, the most recent development in the township includes the long awaited Village Center, which resides next to the historic village area.
