Flatiron District Real Estate

Anyone who lives in Manhattan’s Flatiron District knows that this is a small and charming neighborhood named after the Flatiron Building. Also known as the Fuller Building, the Flatiron Building was one of the tallest buildings in New York City upon its completion in 1902. The building is situated at 175 Fifth Avenue in the borough of Manhattan and sits on a triangular island block at 23rd Street, Fifth Avenue, and Broadway, facing Madison Square. Although the Flatiron Building is small in comparison to Manhattan’s newer skyscrapers, its triangular shape helps it stand out from the rest.

Flatiron District real estate is especially popular for photographers, as there are a large number of photographer’s studios and associated businesses located there. Before it was renamed, Flatiron District was simply referred to as the “Photo District.”

A great number of students also seek to purchase or rent Flatiron District real estate, as there are several schools and colleges located within close proximity to the neighborhood. Located on E. 23rd Street and Lexington Avenue is the Baruch College of the City University of New York. The educational institution sits on the former site of the Free Academy (now the City College of New York), which was founded in 1847 and was the first establishment of free public higher education in the United States. Also situated on 24th and 25th Streets between Third and Lexington Avenues are Baruch’s Newman Vertical Campus and the largest collegiate school of business in the nation, the Zicklin School of Business.

Further enhancing Flatiron District real estate is Madison Square Park, a small, 6.2-acre green space located in the district between Fifth Avenue and Madison Avenue on 23rd Street. Madison Avenue starts in the Flatiron District at 23rd Street, and continues north towards the well known Midtown section. Historic Madison Square Park is highly regarded as the vibrant center of the Flatiron District, as it offers beautiful gardens, lush lawns, and cultural programs for people of all ages. The park is considered an oasis by those who own Flatiron District real estate as well as by those who work nearby.

Located in the park is an old-fashioned shake and burger stand known as the Shake Shack. The destination is popular for its delicious burgers and thick shakes. If you are planning to sell Flatiron District real estate, be sure to mention this favorite local spot to your potential buyers, as they will surely thank you for the tip.

There are also several other restaurants in the Flatiron District, many of which are quite trendy. But as indicated through the popularity of the Shake Shack, those who live or work in the area also appreciate the “tried and true” restaurants, such as the Old Town Bar and Restaurant, located at 45 East 18th Street, in business since 1892.

Flatiron District real estate is also well known for being set within the “Toy District.” There are several toy manufacturers that have trade showrooms in buildings across Madison Square Park in this district, as well as the headquarters of the Toy Industry Association. The Toy Industry Association puts on the American International Toy Fair every year, attracting people from all over the world.

Other distinct features of the Flatiron District include the colorful Museum of Sex and the Gershwin Hotel, both of which are located on 27th Street. A tribute to the late pop artist Andy Warhol, the Gershwin features a selection of his art and memorabilia on display throughout the hotel.

Flatiron District real estate also appeals to those who enjoy shopping. Many retailers as well as restaurant owners have revived the elaborate facades and shopper-friendly dimensions of the Flatiron District. There are several stores around the area such as Ann Taylor, Victoria’s Secret, Club Monaco, and Origins. Flatiron District’s Historic Madison Square Park also marks the end of “ladies mile,” which is New York City’s most fashionable shopping district along Broadway and Sixth Avenue. This is also the location of the original Macy’s (home of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade) and Tiffany’s.
